“Lachlan!” Chase called, bounding out of the elevators as the doors swung open. He’d spent the last fifteen minutes looking for his Scottish mate until one of the Haematology nurses revealed he’d missed him knocking off for the day by barely a few minutes. He spotted the Scot heading for ER with his bag slung over his shoulder and Chase couldn’t help but feel a pang for his friend. Lachlan still wouldn’t use the main entrance to come and go, knowing it was only a few paces away that he’d nearly been killed. Instead, he came and left via the ER ambulance entry and Chase couldn’t blame him for that.
Lachlan’s attention was caught and he turned around with a smile. “Heya, buddy. Everything okay?” he asked and shoved his hands into the pockets of his leather jacket.
“Yes and no,” Chase admitted. “I have a favour I need to ask of you, which kind of involves roping you in for a trip to New York. I wouldn’t normally ask because I know you’ve got a lot of shit going on, but I really think you might be able to help.”
Lachlan raised his eyebrows. “New York? Has something happened? Are you in trouble?”
Chase shook his head, reaching up to scratch the back of it. “No, nothing like that. Do you remember Rogue’s friend from my Bachelor party and our wedding, Remy? The guy who bailed me out of jail?” He gestured over to the Clinic waiting area and went over there so they could talk without the passing parade of the hospital foyer.
“Aye, of course,” Lachlan confirmed, following behind Chase. “We chatted quite a wee bit at your party. Nice lad, albeit a bit on the mysterious side.”
“He got shot,” Chase revealed quietly, watching Lachlan for a reaction. “In the back, while he was on a mission. He’s still in that limbo stage of waiting to see if there is any lasting damage.”
Lachlan’s eyes widened and he stared at Chase. He had to swallow to wet his dry throat before he spoke; unfortunately there was no way of stopping thoughts of his own brush with death coming to the forefront when he heard something like this. All the feelings, physical, mental and emotional were never very far from the surface. He rubbed his fingers over his lips. “Fuck,” was all he could come up with for the moment.
Chase rested his hand on Lachlan’s arm when he noticed some of the colour leave the Scotsman’s face. “He’s okay, but the wound is infected and he doesn’t want to end up back in hospital so Rogue and I are going to drive up to New York this evening so I can check him over and hopefully avoid that. Probably just needs antibiotics and a bit of TLC. But he’s not coping so well in general…”
“You want me to me have a wee chat to him about it,” Lachlan guessed. He chewed on the corner of his lip as he watched two kids speed by with latex gloves blown up like balloons. “I dinnae know how help I’ll be, Chase. I’m nay exactly fully recovered myself, at least mentally anyway.”
“You’ve been there,” Chase told him with a small nod. “You know what it’s like. No one else does. I think he’s just feeling isolated and scared. I just thought it might help to talk to someone who came through it, shit and all. You underestimate yourself. Ten months ago, I was knelt over you on a gurney covered in your blood as I helped to try to get your heart beating again. Ten months down the track and you’re standing here with me, living and breathing, working, smiling. You’re married, you have a baby on the way… I think he just needs to know that it’s okay to feel like shit after everything that’s happened to him.”
Lachlan scratched his head, resting his shoulder against the wall. “You’re going tonight, you said?” He exhaled slowly. “Aye, okay. Tara’s been wanting to go stay with her parents for a few days anyway. She’s getting broody in her later months, wants to have her family around her. If you give me the address, maybe I can go have a wee chat with him in the morning? You and Rogue can meet me there? If he’s got an infection, he’ll nay be feeling good at all right now. Best get the ABs started before I come in and gatecrash on his peace and quiet.”
“Are you sure?” Chase finally asked, watching Lachlan apologetically.
“Ach, aye,” Lachlan said with a small, dismissive smile. “I cannae run from the memories forever. Better if I can use them to help someone else. You’re right. I do know exactly how he’ll be feeling and hopefully I can help him see it willnae always feel so bad.”
Chase gave his friend a brief hug, patting him on the back. “I owe you one. Let’s say a weekend of babysitting when you and Tara want to get hot and sweaty after the baby is born,” he teased.
Lachlan smirked. “Oh, aye? I’m holding you to that buddy,” he promised. “Give me a call with the address and I’ll catch up with you in New York. Say hello to that beautiful wife of yours… and the wee baby girl,” he added with a wink. “Speak soon.” He threw a wave over his shoulder on his way to the ER again.
