[livejournal.com profile] mind_the_muse February Prompt: Five days you never had and one day you did

A wedding…

Chase’s mother smiled at him as she adjusted his bow tie and brushed some non-existent lint of his tuxedo jacket. “I’m so proud of you, darling. I’ve dreamt about this day since the moment I gave birth to you and you came out all wrinkly and whiny.” She kissed his cheek. “One day you’ll know exactly how wonderful becoming a parent is and how much you yearn to see these special days come.”

He laughed, taking her fussing hand and kissing the back of it. “Let’s get the ring on my finger first, yeah?” he joked as she moved on to fix the rose in his buttonhole.

“I love you, my gorgeous son. You’ve made me the proudest Mum on the face of the earth.”

“You said that to me the day I got my measles vaccination and didn’t cry,” he reminded her with a fond shake of his head.

She smiled, her eyes sparkling. “Mums are allowed to be sickeningly sappy on their son’s wedding day. And I’m going to cry, so you’ll just have to live with it.” She smoothed his hair down. “I love you, Robbie.”

A goodbye…

Chase’s father embraced him warmly at Melbourne Airport. Chase hugged him back, smiling at the encouraging pat on the back he received as he stepped back out of the brace. “You’ll knock them dead, son. Just make sure you come back and visit us. We’re going to miss you, you know,” his father said.

“I will, Dad,” Chase promised with a smirk. “Do you honestly think you can get rid of me that easily?”

“We’ll just have to keep trying, won’t we?” his father joked back. He leaned in and kissed his son’s cheek and handed him his passport and boarding pass. “No coming back talking with a funny accent now.”

Chase laughed. “I wouldn’t dream of it. Catch you, Dad.” He gave a small wave and nodded as he disappeared up the boarding tunnel.

A perfect match…

“I want more.”

“I thought you were getting a little worn out, but...”

“That's not what I meant.”

“I know.”
She smiles, stepping forward to brush her hand over his. “I’ve been thinking the same thing lately.”

Chase’s own smile brightens and he looks down at their hands. “Honestly?”

“Well, I know everybody lies, but I like to save my stock of untruths for pissing House off,” she commented. “So, don’t I get a kiss?”

Chase laughed, pulling her into his arms and kissing her as the snow fell softly around them.

A life saved…

“The transplant took. She’s going to live.”

Chase looked up from the patient file. “Really? It took? You’re talking about Carla, right?”

“That’s what I just said, or are you purposefully being thick to perfect the wide-eyed imbecile look? Do you really make a big enough of a habit trying to kill your patients that you have to ask which transplant patient is going to survive?” House asked with a snort and a roll of his eyes. “She’s going to live. Her kids get to keep their Mummy. Everyone dances around with daisies in their hair in Twinkly Winkly Land. That’s it. I’m going to get a beer.”

“Can I join you?”

House looked at him like he’d just sprouted breasts and started chanting ‘I must increase my bust.’ He looked like he wanted to outright decline, but then nodded. “Alright. But you’re buying,” he said and limped out of the office.

A face from the past…

Chase picked up the phoned at the ICU reception desk. “Robert Chase,” he answered. He had been paged saying there was a phone. Apparently someone else with an Australian accent, though for the life of him he couldn’t think who it might be.

“Rob? It’s Vince. It’s great to hear your voice.”

“Vince?” Chase gasped, looking around as if someone was going to say ‘Gotcha!’ How was it is ex was calling him out of the blue after, what? Eight years or so since they broke up? Broke up and broke Chase’s heart. Vince had been his first boyfriend and he’d fallen hard for him.

“Yeah, mate. I was just wondering when you might be coming back home. I miss you. I thought we could catch up next time you’re in Aus,” Vince said, his voice a little crackly on the long distance line.

Chase’s forehead creased. Things like this only happened in cheesy romantic comedies. “Catch up?”

“Yeah. Or has someone else snapped you up? Not that I would be surprised to hear that affirmed. Some slicked, oily personal trainer with big balls or similar?”

Chase hesitated and bit his lip. “No, I’m single. I was thinking of a trip home in April.”

“Give me a call? For old time’s sake?”

“For old time’s sake,” Chase agreed.

An era lost…

“You're fired.”

“Wha... what because I yelled at you?

“Because you've been here the longest, learned all you can, or you haven't learned anything at all... either way, it's time for a change.”

“Fine.”

Chase didn’t look back as he walked down the corridor and away from House’s office. He knew deep down it was the end of era. An end he didn’t want to face, but it had come. Four years of what? Even as he stepped into the elevator, feeling a disbelieving numbness in his gut, he knew he was walking away from House with just about nothing. Or perhaps there was something. Something he would now have to move on without.

And alone.
